2009 AVIVA MSA CLASSIC - UPDATE 9 APRIL

ENTRIES NOW OPEN!

On behalf of International Motor Sports and the Motor Sports Association, I am delighted to welcome you to The 2009 Aviva MSA Classic.

Since the event was reinstated in 2007 we have been amazed at the positive response received from participants and the media, and the event continues to go from strength to strength.  The Daily Telegraph describes it as an event to put on your ‘must do list’ while James May, who took part in the 2007 event, called the day ‘brilliant’!

2009 is set to be another fantastic year, with yet more routes meaning even more choice for participants.  We have introduced new start locations at Andover and Chelmsford and as always you have my personal guarantee that these routes, like the others, will be full of interesting check points, breathtaking scenery, and some of the best driving roads Britain has to offer.

With an entry fee of just £115 or less regardless of the number of people in your car, The Aviva MSA Classic still represents outstanding value for money.

I very much look forward to seeing you at Silverstone.

Andrew Coe

CHIEF EXECUTIVE, INTERNATIONAL MOTOR SPORTS LTD

Who’s Organising the Event?

The company behind the Formula 1 British Grand Prix and Wales Rally GB - the UK round of the FIA World Rally Championship, is organising The Aviva MSA Classic.  International Motor Sports Ltd is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Royal Automobile Club Motor Sports Association Ltd, the governing body of UK motor sport.

History of the Event

The first MSA Classic took place in 1986, and ran 15 times until 2001.  In 1996 the number of entries peaked at 1770, and the event was the largest moving classic car event in the world.  In 2007 the original organising team and Norwich Union united once more to revive the original and highly successful event format, with 6 routes - all of which were oversubscribed within 3 weeks.  The event continues to grow in size with more routes added each year.

What’s the Format of the Event?

This year’s event takes place on Sunday 20th September and offers starting locations at Andover, Bath, Chelmsford, Cheltenham, Chester, Dorking, Norwich, Nottingham and Silverstone.  All routes feature dramatic and picturesque countryside and offer some of the best driving roads in Britain.

The run is intended as a fun event and is wholly non-competitive.  There are no timings or penalties for not following the supplied route and participants are free to travel at their own pace.  Each route will contain a number of check points which will be open for a specified period.  As in the past, check points have been chosen to be of specific interest to the motoring and motor sport enthusiast, in addition to venues of more general interest.

With the finish at Silverstone Circuit, the home of British motor sport and one of the world’s best loved race circuits, participants will be able to realise their dreams and drive their cars on the legendary Grand Prix circuit - home to the Formula 1 British Grand Prix.

Silverstone 2 Route

New for 2009 is the Silverstone 2 route - a shorter route of around 80 miles.  Ideal for cars wishing to travel at a more leisurely pace, this route is aimed particularly at participants who feel their car might benefit from a slightly shorter challenge!  We especially welcome entries from the 1930s & 1940s for this route, as a check point at Compton Verney will allow us to take part in their ‘Memories of Compton Verney’ event, this year centred on this period.

Veteran and Edwardian Route

For the second year running, the Veteran and Edwardian route will welcome cars built before 31st December 1918 to Silverstone for a gentle, shorter route of around 55 miles designed exclusively for them.  With laps of the Grand Prix circuit at the start and the finish, and the security of dedicated RAC breakdown assistance along the entire route, Veteran and Edwardian cars will be able to enjoy the day - at their own pace!

Who can Participate?

The event is open to cars built before 31st December 1988.  Entries will be accepted, and starts allocated, on a first come first served basis.

THE FINISH AT SILVERSTONE

Laps of the Grand Prix Circuit

Take the chance to drive one of the world’s most famous race circuits, home to the Formula 1 British Grand Prix and the home of British motor sport.  Please note that according to Silverstone’s noise policy, all cars must test at no more than 105db on a static and 102db on a drive by, and for safety reasons, the number of cars on the Grand Prix Circuit at any one time may be limited.  Revised arrangements for 2009 aim to ensure that any congestion whilst getting on or off the circuit is limited, giving participants more time to enjoy their laps around the track.

Finishers’ Awards

Each car will receive two commemorative medals in recognition of arriving at Silverstone and completing the event!

Seating

Undercover grandstand seating will be available in the paddock, allowing participants, family and friends to view the cars arriving at the medal presentation area.  Full commentary of the finish ceremony will be provided, including interviews with participants as they arrive.

Catering

Each entry will receive refreshment vouchers for redemption at the Paddock Cafe at Silverstone.  The Cafe will be open all afternoon and a wide range of hot meals and snacks will be available.  In addition, the paddock area will also be the location of the Event Finish Barbeque - a chance to enjoy something to eat while watching the cars proceed through the medal presentation ceremony.

Photographers

Professional photographers will be present at the finish - a colour photograph of each car in the medal presentation area will be provided after the event where possible.
